1. Donate to your local animal shelter or local 501-C(3) animal non-profit. That way you know exactly where your dollars are going and how far they will stretch.
2. Become a foster parent. Whether you love little kittens or giant snakes, every organization needs volunteer fosters! Some require that you fill out a form (usually downloadable online), provide references, or even do home checks prior to fostering. Trust me, although the initial phase may be a little tedious, there is great reward in serving these organizations.
3. Adopt a foster. If you are seeking a pure-bred animal, there are breed-specific rescues that can provide you exactly what you are looking for. To adopt a rescue rather than purchase from a breeder is much more financially reasonable. Plus, you get to give back to the organization and help them help their furry, scaly, or spiky friends. However, you can also seek a reputable breeder who will give you a companion with a good genetics, proper physical health, and stable temperament so you do not have to return a dog with behavioral issues.
